Signs to be aware of
It may be difficult to know if there is reason for concern. But there are a number of attention points which may be signs that a person is involved in extremism or is on a path towards it.
When different behavioral changes and concerning signs appear at the same time there may be reason to react so that the matter can be further assessed. The attention points are not a checklist but merely an aiding tool.
Individual attention points:
- Is involved in violent acts or clashes amongst groups.
- Shows interest in travelling abroad to participate in conflicts or training activities where extremist groups are involved.
- Seeks out websites, literature or film material promoting extremist messages and violence.
- Threatens, harasses or exercises social pressure on others.
- Is involved in events which endorse hateful or violent messages.
- Spreads messages to legitimize violence, for example through social media.
- Shows exaggerated interest in a certain cause or person.
- Expresses contempt and intolerance towards the views of others.
- Behaves in a preaching and moralizing manner.
- Shows an affiliation to extremist messages through clothes, appearance or use of totalitarian symbols.
Attention points related to a person’s social relationships and networks
- Frequents environments with easy access to weapons.
- Socializes with people or groups with extremist views.
- Isolates and distances oneself from family and friendships.
- Quits an education, job or other ties to the surrounding society.
- The family is dysfunctional.
